Attenuated Activation at K-1889, Lake Griffin State Park

Park Sign for Lake Griffin State Park

This morning I activated Lake Griffin State Park which is near Leesburg, FL. The activation was difficult as 20 meters acted as though the entire band was attenuated. Signal reports were lower than usual. I did not have time to try other bands. I made a total of 28 contacts with 5 of them being European (Italy, Germany, and France). All of the contacts were via CW. My set up was a Yaesu FT-450D, 213″ whip and a Chameleon Hybrid Mini on a mag mount. I was running 100 watts because of the band conditions.

Lake Griffin State Park has a small picnic are with a pavilion and play ground, but it basically functions as a boat launch for nearby Lake Griffin. Fishing and boating are the big attraction. There are plenty of parking spots but little shade for activators unless you operate at one of the picnic tables. This park may be a future Kilo award prospect, so I will be visiting it again in the future.
